Developing a model of pre-operative and preparation for anesthesia in Udon Thani Cancer Hospital

Abstract

This research and development study aimed to develop a model of pre-operative and preparation.  The purposive sampling was conducted among five anesthetist nurses, five registered nurses, and 55 cancer patients who were undergoing elective surgeries under general anesthesia.  Data were collected using six questionnaires as follows; 1) pre-operative and preparation guidelines, 2) pre-operative visit plan, 3) anxiety assessment form for patients, 4) satisfaction assessment form for pre-anesthesia preparedness for patients, 5) anesthetic risk reports and nursing risk report, and 6) reflective thinking diaries.  These questionnaires showed content validity, with IOC 0.60-1.00.  Cronbachs Alpha Coefficient were 0.90.  This study was conducted in accordance with the process as follow: planning, developing of pre-operative and preparation model, applying the model, observation, and reflection.

Result: The study of effectiveness of applying a pre-operative and preparation model for patients revealed as follows: 1) anesthetist nurses improved their professional skills before giving anesthesia for patients undergoing surgery, 2) The satisfactions of the practitioners towards patient-pre-operative and preparation model were found at a high level, 3) The satisfactions of patients towards the use of pre-operative and preparation model showed at a high level, 4) There were no incidences of postponed surgeries.  The patient’s anxiety before receiving anesthesia was at a moderate level.

Conclusion: The pre-operative and preparation model for patients undergoing surgery was effective as it improved professional knowledge and skills of anesthetist nurses with good clinical outcomes.  Thus, the model was useful for clinical developing.
