Outcomes of the Development of Care for Septicemic Patients in In-Patient Units at Dankhunthod Hospital, Nakhon Ratchasima Province

Abstract

Objectives of this research and development  study were to develop nursing practice guidelines and to examine the nurses’ knowledge and practices as well as the outcomes of patients with septic shock cared by the guidelines. The study was divided into 3 phases: phase 1: situational analysis and planning; phase 2: development and implementation of the clinical nursing practice guideline ; phase 3: evaluation of outcomes. The samples were 25 registered nurses and 66 medical records of patients admitted  with septic shock. The study was conducted during April 2019 and June 2020. The data were collected using patient record forms, evaluation of practice forms, and knowledge assessment forms. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.  

The results showed that : development of care for patients with septic shock that after the clinical nursing practice guideline was applied to practice; results showed  that complications and mortality rates were reduced, both with no statistical significant. Referral rates were significantly reduced. (p<0.05). The nurses’ knowledge mean scores were significantly higher when comparing between before and after the trainings (p<0.001). The nursing practice outcomes were significant increased (p<0.05). It can be concluded that, the development of clinical nursing practice guidelines for patients with septic shock will be helpful for the early assessment, continuing monitoring, and appropriate treatments to improve both clinical and nursing.
