The effectiveness of using standard preparing program on knowledge and behavior of primigravida mother receiving spinal anesthesia for Cesarean section at Nongkhai hospital

Abstract

Pre-Operation Preparation providing information and suggestions improves information processing, knowledge, and understanding, which leads to better medical practices and safer use of anesthesia. The objective is to study the results of the preparation program on improving the knowledge and behavior of primigravidas scheduled with the cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. The study was experimental research examining one group with a pre and post-test quasi-experiment Design. It included 30cases of primigravidas scheduled with the cesarean section at Nongkhai Hospital from July 2019 to June 2020. It calculated the sample group by G*Power3.1 program developed from the anesthesia journal, providing contents of procedural information, sensory information, behavioral information, and coping skills information. The study was approved by 3 experts and produced as a subtitled video from the actual situation. The instruments used in collecting data include personal information, knowledge test, and pre and undergoing anesthesia behavior. The contents validity index was 0.86. The KR20 formula for confidence and stability was 0.72. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, analytical statistics, and paired t-test.

                The results showed that the average age of the group was 28.87_+ 5.12. 50% of the group graduated with a bachelor's degree, and most of them were employed. 80% had never received any information about spinal anesthesia and 93.33% had undertaken spinal anesthesia. The average knowledge improvement was 96.30%. The mean score increased significantly (p<0.001) from 8.10_+1.50 to 15.60_+0.62. To conclude, the program is another option to help prepare for operations involving spinal anesthesia.
