Effectiveness of Participation Model for Preventing Diabetes Complications in the Elderly Case Study in Khlong Khlung Hospital Kamphaeng Phet Province
Abstract
This quasi–experimental research was to study the effects of diabetes self–management program by relying on family cooperation in modifying self–care behaviors of diabetic patients to control the accumulated blood sugar level (HbA1c). The sample consisted of elderly diabetic patients who received services at Khlong Khlung Hospital Kamphaeng Phet Province, 70 people randomly selected into the experimental group and the comparison group, each group of 35 people. The experimental group received a diabetes self–management
program based on the concept of Kanfer and Gaelick, 1988.(1) As for the comparison group, they will receive services as usual. The research tools consisted of diabetes self–management program and a self–care behavior questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t–test and paired t–test.
The results showed that after using the program for 3 months, it was found that the experimental group had better eating behaviors and accumulated sugar (HbA1c) significantly lower than the comparison group (p<0.05), but the overall self–care behavior of both groups no difference
