Abstract

Introduction: Appropriate education will help increase confidence and skills in managing gestational diabetes mellitus, which will positively affect the mother's mental health and overall quality of life.

Research objectives: To study the effectiveness of an educational program on blood sugar control behaviors and blood sugar levels among women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Research methodology: Forty pregnant women with GDM from Udon Thani Hospital's antenatal clinic participated in a four-week educational program based on Orem's self-care theory. Data collection included questionnaires on self-care knowledge and behaviors, plus clinical measurements of FBS and HbA1C. The program delivered three educational sessions, with data analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test.

Results: Results showed that after participating in the program, participants' mean knowledge scores increased significantly from 12.9 to 18.4 (p<.001), and self-care behavior scores improved from 50.2 to 58.3 (p<.001). Clinical outcomes also showed significant improvements, with mean FBS decreasing from 165.3 to 115.6 mg/dL and mean HbA1C reducing from 7.7% to 5.1% (p<.001).

Conclusion: The study demonstrates that the educational program effectively improved knowledge, self-care behaviors, and clinical outcomes among women with GDM.

Implications: Recommendations include implementing this program as a standard care protocol for GDM patients, extending it to nearby healthcare facilities, and conducting further research with a control group to confirm its effectiveness.
