Abstract

Introduction: Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe infectious condition that spreads rapidly and carries a high mortality rate. It is therefore necessary to study the factors associated with disease severity in order to assist with risk assessment and guide appropriate treatment planning.

Research Objectives: To study the factors associated with and predictive of the severity of necrotizing fasciitis in patients admitted for hospital treatment.

Research Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 64 patients diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis admitted to the male and female surgical wards at Udon Thani Hospital. Data were collected using questionnaires covering general patient information, a disease severity assessment tool, a knowledge assessment, and a self-care behavior questionnaire for necrotizing fasciitis patients. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results: Variables significantly associated with and predictive of necrotizing fasciitis severity (P < 0.05) were: marital status (OR = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.01–0.52, p = 0.01), occupation (OR = 7.35, 7.81, 95% CI: 0.01–0.44, p = 0.01), cause of infection (OR = 11.46, 95% CI: 1.99–65.89, p = 0.01), knowledge about necrotizing fasciitis (OR = 13.85, 95% CI: 2.42–79.34, p = 0.01), and patient self-care behavior (OR = 3.94, 95% CI: 1.05–14.81, p = 0.04).

Conclusion: Assessing the severity of necrotizing fasciitis is important for use as information in planning patient care to prevent serious complications.

Implications: Further research should be conducted in larger sample groups to confirm long-term effectiveness.
