Abstract

Introduction: Clinical nursing practice guidelines for managing patients with retinal disease who receive intravitreal Avastin injections enable professional nurses to provide standardized care, thereby reducing patient anxiety and improving treatment compliance.

Objectives: 1) To develop clinical nursing practice guidelines for managing patients with retinal disease receiving intravitreal Avastin injections at Phra Ajarn Fan Ajaro Hospital; 2) To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed clinical nursing practice guidelines for managing patients with retinal disease receiving intravitreal Avastin injections at Phra Ajarn Fan Ajaro Hospital; 3) To assess anxiety levels in patients with retinal disease receiving intravitreal Avastin injections.

Methodology: This investigation was a research and development study designed to develop clinical nursing practice guidelines (CNPG) for managing patients with retinal disease receiving intravitreal Avastin injections. The sample comprised 20 patients receiving intravitreal Avastin injections and 5 professional nurses. Research instruments included: 1) Clinical nursing practice guidelines for managing patients with retinal disease receiving intravitreal Avastin injections; 2) An assessment tool evaluating the application of the developed clinical nursing practice guidelines; 3) A patient anxiety assessment instrument; and 4) A questionnaire asking professional nurses' opinions regarding the guidelines. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, including percentages, means, standard deviations, and paired t-test analysis.

Results: 1) The developed guidelines incorporated evidence from 11 empirical sources; 2) Professional nurses demonstrated a high level of competence in applying the guidelines; 3) Professional nurses reported high satisfaction with the guidelines; 4) Patient anxiety levels decreased significantly following implementation of the guidelines, declining from high pre-intervention levels to moderate post-intervention levels (p < .05).

Conclusion: The developed clinical nursing practice guidelines provide clear, systematic procedures that professional nurses can effectively implement. The guidelines enhance patient cooperation and improve outcomes for intravitreal Avastin injection therapy by reducing patient anxiety.

Recommendations: The guidelines should be reviewed collaboratively with ophthalmologists annually to ensure ongoing refinement and optimal adaptation to the organizational context.
