Assessment of needs and responsiveness on those needs of family members’ patients during preoperative period are essential guidelines for nurses to provide the most responsive care to family members needs. The objectives of this study were to examine and to compare the needs and received need responses among family members while waiting for patients receiving glaucoma surgery. A convenience sample of 82 patients’ family members involving in cataract surgery at Sirindhorn hospital, Bangkok during April-June, 2017 participated in the study. Data were collected by using family members’ and patients’ personal questionnaires. Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the questionnaires were .90 and .96 respectively. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired t-test.
Results showed that the overall needs (M = 2.46, SD = 0.37) and each aspect of family member needs were rated at high level. While overall need responsiveness (M = 1.63, SD = 0.50) and each aspect of need responsiveness were rated at moderate level. Results of comparisons found that needs responsiveness were statistical significance in average scores lower than those of needs scores of overall score, each of the aspect scores, and items scores.
Findings of the study suggest that nurses involving in providing care for patients receiving glaucoma surgery should develop nursing care system and design new nursing interventions to respond appropriately to the needs of patients’ family members during the intra-operative period.
