Role Performance in Health Promotion among Nurses in the Eastern Region

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive comparative study was to examine role performance in health promotion and compare role performance of professional nurses in health promotion with difference in individual factors and level of health care services. A multi-stage random sampling was used to recruit a sample of 2,104 professional nurses from primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care services. Research instruments contained self-report questionnaires of a demographic and the nursing role performance in health promotion in according to Ottawa charter with its Cronbach’s alpha reliability of .97. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test and one-way ANOVA.

The results revealed that mean scores of role performance in health promotion of professional nurses in according to the Ottawa charter of each dimension were between 1.56 to 4.12 (SD = 1.38 - 3.34). Participants who completed educational level higher than a baccalaureate degree performed more than those completed educational level at a baccalaureate degree on health promotion, both overall (t = 2.487, p < .05) and subscales’ scores. Participants with administrative position performed health promotion more than those with practicum level, both overall scores (t = 2.165, p < .05) and 2 subscales’ scores of build healthy public policy (t = 4.506, p <.001) and create supportive environments (t = 2.665, p <.01). These findings indicate that nurse directors and instructors should develop a short-course training curriculum to enhance knowledge and understanding on health promotion and role performance in according to the Ottawa charter for nurses with bachelor degree and in practitioner level.
