Keywords:

This study aimed to examine factors related to the transcultural nursing competence of nurse practitioners working with Muslim clients. A multi-stage random sampling was used to recruit a sample of 132 nurse practitioners who graduated either master or bachelor degree with a nurse practitioner certificate. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires composed of personal information, working experiences as a nurse, training experiences related to nurse practitioner competence, cultural diversity values, supporting policy in work place, and self-evaluation on transcultural nursing competences based on the Campinha - Bacote model. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman rank correlation, and the Mann-Whitney U-test.
The results revealed that the total score of transcultural nursing competence of the nurse practitioners was at a moderate level (M= 2.85, SD=.31). Working experiences as a nurse after graduated a master degree, working experiences after completed a nurse practitioner certificate, and cultural diversity values were positively related (rs= .99, p<.01, rs= .25, p< .01, and rs= .23, p <.01, respectively), and training related to transcultural nursing competence of nurse practitioner was negatively related (Z= -2.28, p<.05) to transcultural nursing competences of the nurse practitioners. These findings suggest that cultural diversity values should be promoted to nurse practitioners should be the development of transcultural nursing competence of nurse practitioners by emphasizing on providing knowledge and awareness of the importance of giving care for clients with cultural diversity.
