Development Of Family Caregivers’ Knowledge And Skills Regarding Older Adults’ Care

The purpose of this research was to develop knowledge and skills among family caregivers
regarding older adults’ care. The research was conducted in Wang Chomphu Municipality, Maung
District, Phetchabun. Phase 1 assessed the level of need in caring for older adults via questionnaires
administered to 161 family caregivers. Phase 2 was comprised of a two-day training program, delivered
to 32 family caregivers, to develop and evaluate the older adult’s care program. Research instruments
in this phase were a training plan for older adults’ care, the 6 dimensions of knowledge questionnaire,
and 3 evaluation skills. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means and standard
deviations.
The results showed that, regarding older adults’ care needs, 9 items were at a moderate
level and 3 items were at a low level. After participating in the training program, family caregiver
knowledge regarding caring for older adults with common diseases, managing emergencies, helping
older adults manage daily activities, medication use, health promotion, and environmental healthcare
were at high levels. The family caregiver skills regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation, assisting older
adults taking medications, and promoting exercise in older adults were at correct levels.
