Abstract

The predictive correlation study aimed to determine the supportive care needs and its predicting factors, such as age, anxiety, and depression among patients with breast cancer. Seventy-seven breast cancer patients aged 20 years or older receiving treatment at Chon Buri Cancer Hospital were recruited for the study using a simple random technique. Questionnaires were used to gather the personal and clinical data. It included the Supportive Care Needs Survey- Short Form 34 (SCNS-SF34) Thai version, the Thai Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Thai HADS). Data collection was conducted from August 2019 to February 2020. Descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis.

The results revealed that  most participants had a mean age of 48.07 years old, stage 2 breast cancer, and received regular follow-up. Around 19.5% and 14.3% of the participants had severe anxiety and depression. The highest supportive care needs were the needs of patient care and support domain (M = 47.73, SD = 25.46). The most prevalent supportive care needs were concerns about breast cancer patients’ closed ones (50.65%) and fear of cancer spreading (49.35%). Depression (β = 0.34, p = .002) was a significant factor that explained 10.6% of the variance in the supportive care needs (adj. R2 = .106, p < .05). The findings suggest that breast cancer patients have various supportive care needs in different domains. Nurses should focus more on fulfilling the supportive care needs of breast cancer patients, especially those with depression. Further research is needed to comprehensively understand the supportive care needs in different areas and disease trajectories.
