Abstract

This survey research aimed to study the participation and related factors of village health volunteers (VHVs) in promoting the health of the elderly. The study population consisted of 114 VHVs in Nong Pawa Village, Ban Khai District, Rayong Province. The sample size was 85 people. Data were collected between January and February 2024 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, and Chi-square tests at a significance level of 0.05.

The results of the study found that VHVs had a moderate level of knowledge and understanding of promoting the health of the elderly in the community, with an average score of 14.22. The level of VHV participation in all aspects of promoting the health of the elderly had an average score of 4.04 (SD = 0.56). When considering each aspect, it was found that participation in sacrifice, development, and practice was the highest (average score of 4.16, SD = 0.42), followed by participation in evaluation (average score of 4.04, SD = 0.54). Age (r = -0.220, p < .05) and duration of work (r = -0.218, p < .05) were negatively related to the level of participation in promoting the health of the elderly. Guidelines for promoting the participation of VHVs in activities promoting the health of the elderly should emphasize participation in identifying problems and their real causes, participation in decision-making and organizing activities, assignment of tasks consistent with the knowledge, abilities, and aptitudes of each individual, and holding meetings to exchange work experiences among VHVs to create learning and understanding, enabling them to perform their duties appropriately and correctly.
