Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Instructions for Authors

The Pacific Rim International Journal of Nursing Research (PRIJNR) is an English language double blind, peer-reviewed, quarterly publication, and the Official Journal of the Thailand Nursing and Midwifery Council in Bangkok.

Focus and Scope: PRIJNR provides an international forum a forum for nurses and midwives in the Pacific Rim region and other countries to publish their scholarly work. The Editors invite the submission of high quality, original manuscripts on nursing research, literature reviews, policy or concept analysis and other rigorous scholarly papers of a high standard that are evidence-based and contribute to nursing knowledge, health improvement of populations, and development of the profession. An example of the latter might be a research methodology paper. Preference is given to systematic literature reviews rather than narrative reviews, as they are a better form of evidence. This journal does not publish systematic reviews that have not been conducted within the last year. Authors who use English as a second language are highly encouraged to have their manuscripts professionally edited for content, grammar and punctuation, prior to submission, and follow these Instructions for Authors very carefully. Failure to comply with all of these Guidelines might result in rejection of your manuscript.

General Information: Authors should read the publication policies of PRIJNR to be found at Submitted papers should be relevant to an international audience. Do not assume that readers have knowledge of national and local practices, organizations or professional bodies. Avoid the use of acronyms, and use terminology that is internationally acceptable, or is clearly defined. Authors should consult the most recent issue of PRIJNR for style and structure.

Contributors and Acknowledgements: All authors should have made substantial contributions to: (1) conception and design of the study, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data or (2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, and (3) final approval of the submitted version. Individuals who provided help during the research (e.g., providing language translation or statistical help) that do not meet criteria for authorship should be acknowledged but not appointed as co-authors.

Word Counts: Total word counts, excluding abstract references, tables, and figures are not to be exceeded: Evidence-based scholarly paper or concept or policy analysis (4000 words); Quantitative research (5000 words); Qualitative research and Mixed-method research (6000 words); Literature review (6000 words); and Abstract (250 words).

In the Cover Letter the corresponding author should describe and certify, on behalf of all co-authors, EACH of the following eight points about their manuscript:

  1. 1. The name of the guidelines they have followed for their research design and reporting of their original study;
  2. 2. The work has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis);
  3. 3. The manuscript is not under consideration for publication elsewhere;
  4. 4. Each author has read and agreed with the manuscript as written and submitted, and has contributed, in a significant manner, to the development of the content;
  5. 5. If accepted, the article will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or any
    other language, without the written consent of the Publisher
  6. 6. That ethical approval for the study was obtained from a suitably constituted research ethics committee or institutional review board. Provide the proper name of the committee, the approval number and the date. In countries or regions where there is no fully constituted IRB or REC, the authors must certify that the research was undertaken following the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki (see:;
  7. That there is clear description regarding conflict of interest (that is “The authors declare no conflict of interest” OR “The authors declare an actual or potential conflict of interest, being….”;
  8. 8. The name of any organization or individual providing funding for the study or project involved, as well as any funding number.

If any of these points are not addressed in the Cover Letter the manuscript will not be sent for review.

File 2. Checklist Guidelines for research report or systematic review. PRJINR requires that authors use internationally recognized reporting guidelines to prepare the manuscript of their study or systematic review.  Before the authors begin writing manuscript, download the correct guideline for study using the tools provided by the EQUATOR network:   
The authors need to mention in the methods section what reporting guideline have used, AND submit a completed copy of the relevant reporting checklist when submit the paper.

File 3: Title Page, This includes: the title of the manuscript; the running title of 6-7 words, the full name, academic and professional credentials, institutional affiliation(s), postal and e-mail addresses of each author. An asterisk (*) is to be used to designate the corresponding author. The title of the manuscript should be no more than 15 words, including the design of the study (for example, A Cross-sectional Study of Factors affecting Diet Control in Thai Women with Diabetes).

File 4: Manuscript in continuous order, Title, Abstract, Keywords, Text, Acknowledgments, and References. Add Tables, Figures and Appendices, each on a separate page. Each page is to be numbered in the upper right corner. Put a running title (shortened version of the title) in the upper left corner of each page. Manuscripts are to be written using Microsoft Word, 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced and with a page number in the top left hand corner of each page.

Abstract: Should be a succinct summary of the manuscript, and contain no more than 250 words. Abbreviations, references, statistical information and sub-headings are not to be included. For research studies include: brief background of the topic and significance of the study; the major aim of the study; brief summary of study setting and number of participants; the study design; major methods used to collect and analyse data, including the proper name of instruments used; the major findings; and conclusions and implications for nursing practice.

Each manuscript is to have a duplicate abstract written in Thai and English. Abstracts of non-Thai authors will be translated into Thai by the Editors after the manuscript has been accepted for publication. The abstract is to be on a separate page, with the title of the manuscript listed. Remember to revise your abstract(s) on resubmissions.

Key Words: No more than ten key words that accurately identify the manuscript’s topic, main method and focus, are to be listed in alphabetical order. Key words found in Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®), PubMed or CINAHL are preferred.

Text: For research manuscripts, ALL of the following sections are to be included: Introduction; Review of Literature; Study Aim; Methods (including sub-sections of Design, Sample and Setting, Ethical Considerations; Data Collection; and Data Analysis); Results; Discussion; Limitations; and Conclusions and Implications for Nursing Practice. Practice can include settings where nurses work, future research studies, education, management or nursing policy. Ensure there is no duplication of content in various sections.Include the name of the primary ethics committee giving approval for the study and the approval number.

In Concept Analysis, Policy Analysis, Literature Reviews or other Scholarly Papers, the sections will vary depending upon the processes and methods used. Qualitative studies generally have the bulk of literature review in the Discussion section.

The first time an abbreviation is used, please state the words in full followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, for example: “The World Health Organization (WHO) definition of…”. Thereafter, the abbreviation, without parentheses, may be used.

Avoidance of labeling of people: Be very sensitive to this in your writing. For example, do not use “diabetic mothers” (use “mothers with diabetes”) or “schizophrenic patients” (use “patients with schizophrenia”).

Acknowledgments: Briefly acknowledge research funders, and any research participants.

Plagiarism and inappropriate referencing: PRIJNR takes plagiarism seriously. The copying of other authors work without appropriate referencing will not be tolerated. Word strings of 6-7 words directly quoted from the literature or other sources must be referenced and placed in inverted commas. However, it is better to paraphase the work of other authors to show that you have interpreted their idea in the context of your writing. Authors should use anti-plagiarism software to check their manuscript before submission or resubmission to detect the level of non-original material or incorrect referencing. Be aware that before peer review your manuscript will be subjected to anti-plagiarism software to detect unreferenced, non-original material and other issues with referencing. All manuscripts will undergo a second check before a manuscript is accepted.

References: Concept Analysis, Policy Analysis, or Research papers are not to exceed 40 references. For Literature Review papers the limit is 55 references. Ensure that citations used are as contemporary as possible, including those from the current year of writing. Delete older literature citations unless these are central to your study. The majority of citations should be from the last five years, including the year of submission of the manuscript.

Citations in the text are to be made using superscript Arabic numerals in the order in which the citations appear, and after punctuation where possible. All references are to be listed as citations in the text, and all citations are to correspond with the appropriate reference. References are to be listed in order of appearance in the text. Citations in the text are to match the reference list. Include DOI numbers for publications where these are available.

Names of all authors are to be cited when there are six or less. When there are seven or more authors the first six authors are to be listed followed by

Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should appear only in the text.

All tables and figures are to be self-contained and complement, but not duplicate, information in the text. No more than a total of five Tables and Figures, each on a separate page, are allowed.

Tables (e.g. Table 1) and Figures (e.g. Figure 1) are to be numbered consecutively, with Arabic numbers, and titled to describe the content contained in each.

A legend, explaining symbols, abbreviations and units used, is to appear below each Table and Figure. Only use capitals in the heading of the table or figure for the first word and for any proper nouns. NOTE if you are reproducing an already published table, figure, or image then you must have received written permission from the author(s) or publisher to do so. Write underneath the table or figure: “Reproduced with the kind permission of (name of publisher or author), (give year of publication)” Then put the full reference in the reference list.

Copyright laws are not to be violated when including content in an Appendix, or a diagram or image or any other part of an article. Ensure that you make a brief statement under the inserted content regarding permission being received for the use of the material (eg. “Reproduced with the kind permission of…”), and give the correct citation for the original authors.

Transfer of Copyright: All authors of the manuscript are required to sign a transfer of copyright agreement before the manuscript is published. Copyright transfer is sent to the corresponding author, upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication, to complete and return, so as to denote the Thailand Nursing & Midwifery Council has exclusive rights to publish, reproduce and distribute the manuscript and all contents therein.

Publication costs: The cost is 10,000 Thai baht (295 USD) per accepted manuscript. This cost will be requested after the manuscript is accepted. In addition, peer review will not be influenced by payment.

Page Proofs: Manuscripts accepted for publication are sent to the publisher in order of acceptance. The publisher sends page proofs (copies of printed pages prior to publication) to the corresponding author for review and approval prior to the manuscript being published. It is essential that approved proofs be returned to the publisher within seven (7) days of receipt for the manuscript to be published. The author(s) are charged for any alterations, other than correction of type setting errors, required to the text or illustrations, at the proof stage.
