The purpose of this cross-sectional research was to study the level of knowledge about diabetes, social support, self-care behavior, ability to control blood sugar levels, and factors related to ability to control blood sugar levels. The sample consisted of 305 elderly people with diabetes, selected by simple random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire which the reliability of each component such as knowledge of diabetes, social support, and self-care behaviors were 0.70, 0.92, and 0.78, respectively. The data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square test. The results revealed as follows:
1. 71.2% of diabetics patients had a low level of knowledge about diabetes, while social support had a high level (46.9%), followed by moderate and low level that were 34.1% and 19.0%, respectively. Moreover, 71.5% of them had moderate level of self-care behaviors and 49.2% of them able to control blood sugar level.
2. As for the factors that were statistically significantly related to ability to control blood sugar levels were self-care behaviors (p= 0.044). There was no relationship between knowledge about diabetes and social support with ability to control blood sugar levels.
Therefore, health care personnel should encourage diabetic patients to modify their self-care behaviors in order to control their blood sugar levels, which can reduce complications.
