Developing Self-Learning Module on the Preparation of Caregivers to Take Care of Stroke Patients at Home Using Integrated Nursing Research of Neurological Institute of Thailand

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to analyze and synthesize the research conducted by nurses of the Neurological Institute of Thailand in order to develop the self-learning module on preparing caregivers for stroke patient home care. The samples were 5 research reports related to stroke caregivers. The research instruments consisted of data extraction form and data codebook. Then the data were analyze by using qualitative process.

The results revealed that most samples focused on preparing stroke caregivers, characterized by lesson plan that approached concepts and theories to develop stroke caregivers’ competencies. These concepts included cooperation, effective communication, self-efficacy, curiosity, and M-E-T-H-O-D concept that enabling them to enhance patient’s quality of life and to prevent complications and stroke recurrence. Stroke caregivers should also have social support to increase their life satisfaction. The developed self-learning module composed of three lessons and their topics, there were instructions that explained how to use the module: following the steps to study content, to perform activities, and to use learning media. Each lesson started with the concept derived from the research synthesis which was modified to be behavioral objectives covering cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains.    These objectives were also used to design pre and post-test.
