Abstract

The purpose of this quasi-experimental research was to compare the mean score of blood pressure and health literacy of the elderly with hypertension who received a self-management program before and after the experiment. The sample group were 45 patients with hypertension in Sakaeo Crown Prince Hospital. The research instruments were divided into 2 types: the tools using for the experiment was the self-management program, including 1) the prepare for participatory patient, 2) self-management, and 3) monitoring and evaluating behavioral. The data collective tools include a blood pressure level recording form and health literacy questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and t-test. The results showed that

1. The elderly with hypertension had a significantly lower mean score  of systolic blood pressure after the experiment than before the experiment (t = 5.404, p< .001). The mean score of diastolic blood pressure It was significantly lower after the experiment than before the experiment (t = 4.885, p< .001).

2. The elderly with hypertension had a significantly higher mean score  of health literacy after the experiment than before the experiment (t =-88.731, -36.483, -19.910, -19.941 and -51.367, respectively).

Therefore, the promoting health literacy and controlling blood pressure levels in patients with the elderly with hypertension should emphasize developing ability to manage themselves in order to achieve sustainable well- being.
