Development of a Capacity-Building Model through Community Participation for Caregivers of Dependent Older Adults in BangNokKhwaek district, Smuth Songkram province

This Participatory Action Research aimed to 1) study the problems of dependent Elderly care in the community 2) develop a capacity-building model through community participation for caregivers of dependent older adults, and 3) study the results of the model. The sample consisted of three groups: 1) 14 participants were informants who participated in model development. 2) 6 participants of caregivers 3) 40 dependent older adults. The research instruments were semi-structured interviews for participants and caregivers, and questionnaires to measure perceived self efficacy of caregivers and quality of life for dependent older adults. The qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis, quantitative data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test.
The research results found that: 1) The problems of dependent elderly care were insufficient caregivers, ineffective caregiving and lack of community participatory management system. 2) A capacity- building model through community participation for caregivers of dependent older adults was called “ACCELA model” included: Attitude: Building a positive attitudes of the dependent elderly care, Collaboration: Producing community network participation, Communication: Good communication, Literacy: Enhancing knowledge and learning experiences, Empower: Enabling them to make dicision, uterlize their skills and knowledge effectively, Achievement: setting a success goals. 3) The results of using model found that perceived self-efficacy of caregivers and quality of life for dependent older adults were improved.
The finding showed that the development of a capacity- building model through community participation for caregivers of dependent older adults could improve the better care and quality of life of dependent older adults.
