The Development of Smoking Cessation Promotion Model for Patients through the Participation of a Multidisciplinary Team, Bang Nam Priao Hospital, Chachoengsao Province

Abstract

This research and development aimed to study the smoking situation of patients and the participation in promoting smoking cessation by multidisciplinary participation, develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the smoking cessation promotion model for patients by multidisciplinary participation at Bang Nam Priao Hospital, Chachoengsao Province.
The sample groups were 1) a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, Registered nurses, and psychologists; 2) 27 patients with smoking behavior. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, focus group, questionnaires, and satisfaction assessment forms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Paired t-tests. The results of the research found that

The smoking cessation promotion model for patients by multidisciplinary participation consisted of assessing smoking behavior, referring patients, assessing readiness to quit smoking, nicotine addiction level, providing concise advice by multidisciplinary, recording data, and following up.

After using the model, it was found that 5 people were able to quit smoking, and
22 people were reduced in the number of cigarettes smoked per day. The level of nicotine addiction was significantly reduced (p <. 05) The level of readiness in the smoking cessation preparation phase increased and the level of satisfaction with the use of the model was at the highest level (4.26 ± 0.60 points).

Therefore, health care units should carry out smoking cessation assistance with the participation of multidisciplinary professionals so that patients can successfully reduce, stop and quit smoking.
