Effects of a Mindfulness-Based Brief Intervention on Depression in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of a mindfulness- based brief intervention on depression in patients with type 2 diabetes. The sample group consisted of type 2 diabetic patients who received treatment at the Diabetes Clinic, Jainad Narendra Hospital, Chainat Province, between December 2024 and April 2025. A purposive sample of 46 people was selected and divided into a comparison group and an experimental group, 23 people each. The comparison group received normal care, while the experimental group received an 8-week mindfulness - based brief intervention program. The instruments used in the experiment were the mindfulness - based brief intervention program. The instruments used for data collection were the 9Q depression assessment form of the Department of Mental Health. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. The results of the research found that:

The research results found that after the experiment, the experimental group had a statistically significant lower mean depression score (7.56±2.10 and 13.61±2.49; p<0.001) than before the experiment and statistically significantly lower than the comparison group. (7.56±2.10 and 12.98±2.34; p<0.001)

Therefore, mindfulness therapy programs should be applied to public health facilities in the same local context to reduce depressive symptoms and improve the quality of life of patients.
