The Effectiveness of a Health Promotion Program for Diabetic Patients with Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease

Abstract

This research was a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test design study aiming to investigate the effect of a health promotion program on diabetic patients with stage 3 chronic kidney disease before and after participation. The sample consisted of 40 diabetic patients with stage 3 chronic kidney disease at DamnoenSaduak Hospital. The research instruments included a health promotion program based on Pender's conceptual framework and a questionnaire on health-promoting behaviors. Data were analyzed using means and standard deviations, and a paired t-test at a significance level of .05. The research results found that:

The mean score of health behavior practices after participation in the program was significantly higher than before participation (p < 0.05). Additionally, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and creatinine levels after the program were significantly lower than those before the program (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) after the program was significantly higher than before participation (p < 0.001).

The research findings suggest that health promotion programs should be applied to groups with non-communicable chronic diseases, including diabetes and other conditions such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, as well as individuals at risk of stroke. This approach aims to enhance patients’ awareness of their conditions, thereby promoting sustained behavioral changes.
