The objectives of this quasi-experimental research were to compare the preventive behaviors for hypertensive complication and blood pressure of an experimental group before and after the experiment, and between the experimental group and a comparison group after the experiment. The sample comprised elderly patients with hypertension who had blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mmHg. Patients who had characteristics within the inclusion criteria were selected by simple random sampling technique to be an experimental group, and patients with most similar characteristics were selected to be a comparison group, 30 persons in each group. The experimental tool was the Complication Preventive Behavioral Development Program for hypertensive elderly based on the Self-efficacy theory. The data collecting tools were: 1) a questionaires with 2 parts; (1) personal and health data, and (2) preventive behaviors for hypertensive complication with 5 subscales and 2) digital sphygmomanometer. The content validity index of parts 2 of the questionnaire were equal to 1 and Cronbach's alpha coefficients were .82 .93 .80 .98 และ .96 respectively. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, Wilcoxson signed ranks test, Mann-Whitney U test and ANCOVA test. The results showed that:
After the experiment, (1) the preventive behaviors for hypertensive complication, included eating, exercise, medication eating, and stress management behaviors of the experimental group were significantly higher than before the experiment and the comparison group, and smoke quitting behaviors of the experimental group was significantly higher than before the experiment (p < .05). (2) The blood pressure of the experimental group were significantly lower than before the experiment and the comparison group (p < .05).
