The objectives of this quasi-experimental research were to compare stroke preventing behaviors and blood pressure of the experimental group between before and after the experiment, and between the experimental group and the comparison group after the experiment. The sample consisted of primary hypertensive patients with low and moderate risk for stroke, who had blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mm.Hg. Patients who had characteristics within the inclusion criteria were selected by simple random sampling to be an experimental group, and patients with similar age and systolic blood pressure were selected to be a comparison group, with 28 persons in each group. The experimental tools were 1) the Behavioral Development Program based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, and 2) an eating and exercise behaviors recording form. The data collection tools were 1) a digital sphygmomanometer, and 2) a questionnaire with 3 parts - (1) personal data, (2) health data, and (3) stroke preventing behaviors, including eating and exercise behaviors. The CVIs of part 2 of the questionnaire were equal at 1, and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were .86, and .80. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The results found as follows:
After the experiment, the stroke preventing behaviors, including eating and exercise behaviors, of the experimental group were significantly higher than before the experiment and the comparison group, and average blood pressure of the experimental group was significantly lower than before the experiment and the comparison group. (p < .05).
