Abstract

The purposes of this descriptive research were to study 1) the level of medication adherence among older patients with type 2 diabetes and 2) selected factors affecting medication adherence among older patients with type 2 diabetes. The research instruments collected through 143 older patients composed of 4-part questionnaire; medication adherence, health beliefs, social support and health communication. The data were then analyzed by using descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results were revealed as follows:

              1.  The overall medication adherence, health beliefs, and health communication were at moderate level (M=2.98, SD=0.48; M=3.02, SD=0.71; M=2.87, SD=0.61, respectively), whereas the overall of social support was at low level (M=2.46, SD=0.55)

              2. The health beliefs, social support, and health communication can statistically significantly predict medication adherence among older patients with type 2 diabetes at 49.80% at the level of .01. (R2adj =.395, p<.01. Moreover, health beliefs were able to predict medication adherence at the highest (Beta=.513; p<.01), followed by health communication and social support (Beta = .334, p <.05; Beta = .262, p <.05), respectively.

Therefore, to promote medication adherence among older patients with type 2 diabetes, there should be concerned about changing health beliefs and health communication for sustainably modified medication adherence behavior.
