Factors Associated With Depression Among The Older Persons With Stroke In Mueang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province

This cross-sectional study aimed to describe the level of depression and the factors associated with depression among the older persons with stroke in Mueang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Multistage sampling was used to obtain 184 subjects from one big hospital and five health promoting hospitals. The research instruments included personal questionnarie, stroke and source of support questionnarie, Thai Geriatric Depression Scale, Thai Mental State Examination, The Barthel Activity of Daily Living Index, and Chula Activities of Daily Living Index. The reliability of the questionnaires coefficient of Cronbach’s alpha were 0.68, 0.63, 0.72, 0.90, 0.95 and 0.89 respectively. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the data.
The results revealed that depression in older persons with stroke were a normal level (70.1%) and normal cognitive function (59.9%). The personal factors associated with depression among the older persons with stroke at the statistical significantly included gender, age, personal averge monthly incomes, and family average monthly incomes (p = 0.006, p = 0.000, p = 0.005, p = 0.048 respectively). The ability to perform basic daily activities, and daily routines on an ongoing basis were significantly correlatied with depression (r= -0.451 and r = -0.292) p < 0.01 respectively. The results of this study can be used to promote screening for depression in older persons with stroke while in-hospital or before discharge from the hospital in order to plan for follow-up in patients with depression. periodically and used in the development of a program to promote daily activities of older persons with stroke and can be used to develop a nursing practice guideline for the prevention of post-stroke depression suitable for older persons with stroke
