Abstract

This systematic review investigates the empirical evidence regarding the use of remote nursing technologies (tele-nursing) for caring for elderly patients with chronic illnesses, who require regular hospital visits. The study aims to explore the effectiveness of these technologies within the scope of professional nursing services. The literature search covered the period from April 2013 to April 2024 and included five databases: PubMed, Science Direct, Ebsco, CINHAL, and the Google Scholar search engine. Researchers selected 136 out of 192 eligible research articles for review. All selected articles were in English and followed a quasi-experimental design involving the actual use of tele-nursing technologies for continuous health care of elderly individuals with chronic conditions, requiring treatment across hospital and home settings. The researcher deemed four of the selected studies suitable for detailed analysis. Plausibility and feasibility analyses summarized the findings. The study concluded that effective guidelines for reducing the risk of hospital readmission in elderly patients with chronic diseases require a comprehensive understanding of the patient's context by nurses, who serve as health service providers. It is crucial for nurses to assess the limitations and user competencies of both patients and their families, to facilitate joint planning that emphasizes continuity of care from hospital discharge onward. Research has demonstrated the benefits of using telemonitoring, which involves continuous monitoring formats. Researchers assessed the efficacy of tele-nursing using various metrics, including medication compliance, everyday activities, and the general health and quality of life of senior citizens. Overall, the study highlights the importance of tele-nursing technologies in maintaining continuity and improving the quality of care for elderly patients with chronic illnesses.
