Abstract

Introduction: Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) are responsible for monitoring the health conditions of people in their communities. They develop the knowledge and of skills of VHVs, who are the village doctors, to ensure that people receive care, consultation, and assistance, especially the elderly who are dependent.

Objective: To assess the knowledge and skills of VHVs in caring for dependent elderly and to evaluate the satisfaction of dependent elderly with the services provided by VHVs.

Research Methodology: This study is quasi-experimental research. The population consists of VHVs in Bang Pla Ma district, Suphanburi province, between March and September 2024, totaling 1,779 people. The purposive selection method resulted in a sample of 60 people. The instruments were a training manual for caregivers of dependent elderly, a knowledge test, a skills assessment form, and a satisfaction assessment form for services for dependent elderly. The validity was checked by three experts. The index of consistency was 0.67 -1.00, and the reliability of the knowledge test, skills assessment form, and satisfaction assessment form was 0.69, 0.78, and 0.98, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-tests.

Results: Most of the sample group were female (96.70%), aged 50-60 years (36.70%, M = 49.53, SD = 11.88), and 46.70% had completed secondary education. The main occupation of 45.00% of the participants was farming. The comparison of the knowledge levels of the training participants showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (p<.05, t = 9.10). Skills assessment revealed mean scores before and after training (5.85, 7.32; SD = 1.93, 0.68) with a statistically significant difference (p < .05, t = 8.14). And the elderly who were dependent had the highest satisfaction scores with the services provided by the village health volunteers, both in each aspect and overall (M = 4.80, SD = 0.51). Therefore, the development of the capacity of VHWs in caring for the elderly with dependency with this training manual can be applied and should be reviewed continuously and periodically.

Conclusion: Development of the capacity of VHVs to care for the elderly with dependency should be carried out periodically to enhance their capacity and skills in caring for the elderly with dependency.

Implications for practice: VHVs should receive periodic ability development training for caring for the dependent elderly (Refresh Course). So, Professional nurses should set up this annually training course to knowledge revision for VHVs and caregivers.
