Study of Essential Competencies and Guidelines for Development Competency of Family Caregivers for Bedridden Patients to Prevent Pressure Ulcers: A Qualitative Study

This qualitative research aimed to examine the essential competencies required for family caregivers of bedridden patients and the approaches for developing these competencies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven key informants who are experts in bedridden patient care, including doctors, nursing instructors, nurses, and nurse aides. The data were analyzed using content analysis with the QDA Miner Lite software.
The findings revealed that family caregivers need basic knowledge about the disease and the care of bedridden patients, a positive attitude towards caregiving, skills in preventing complications, and in managing daily care activities. Additionally, they require communication skills and the ability to utilize support resources effectively. The recommended approaches for competency development should emphasize practical training, the use of diverse teaching materials, and continuous support from healthcare professionals.
The study suggests that the findings could be applied in designing competency development programs for family caregivers of bedridden patients.
