Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to compare the mean dietary behavior scores before and after the intervention, and the proportions of pregnant women who achieved appropriate gestational weight gain during pregnancy and at the end of the program between the two groups. The study included pregnant women with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI and without complications who attended the antenatal care clinic at Chaophraya Yommarat Hospital, Suphanburi Province, from September 2024 to March 2025. A total of 46 participants who met the inclusion criteria were selected and allocated into two groups: the experimental group (n = 23), who received a self-efficacy promotion program combined with routine nursing care, and the control group (n = 23), who received routine nursing care only. Participants were followed at gestational age intervals of 20-24, 24-28, 28-32, 32-36, and 37-40 weeks. Data were collected using a personal information questionnaire and a dietary behavior questionnaire (Cronbach’s α = 0.760). Descriptive statistics included frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Hypothesis testing was conducted using Independent t-test, Chi-square test, Mann–Whitney U test, Paired sample t-test, and Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test.

The findings revealed that, within the experimental group, post-intervention scores for meal patterns and food preparation methods were significantly higher than pre-intervention scores (p<0.05), whereas no significant change was observed in the types of food consumed (p>0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in dietary behavior scores between the experimental and control groups at any time point (p>0.05). Additionally, the proportion of pregnant women whose gestational weight gain aligned with the recommended criteria was significantly higher in the experimental group at the fourth and fifth follow-up assessments (p<0.05). In contrast, no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in the proportion of pregnant women who achieved appropriate gestational weight gain at the end of the program (p>0.05).

The findings indicate that the program helped pregnant women begin to modify their dietary behaviors. Therefore, it can be integrated into nursing practice to promote appropriate dietary behaviors and support pregnant women in achieving recommended gestational weight gain.
