Abstract

The continued increase in the elderly population in Thailand presents a significant public health challenge, particularly the increasing prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and the high risk of progression to dementia. This quasi-experimental study aimed to examine the effects of a cognitive stimulation program on the cognitive function of elderly people with MCI. Forty participants were randomly allocated into experimental (n=20) and control (n=20) groups. The experimental group participated in a 6 session of the cognitive stimulation program , each lasting 90 minutes. Cognitive function was measured using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at three time points: preintervention, post-intervention, and at a 1 month follow up. Data were analyzed using Independent ttests and repeated measures ANOVA.

The results revealed that the mean cognitive score of the experimental group was significantly higher than the control group at the post-intervention period (t=2.152, p=.038). Furthermore, within the experimental group, the mean cognitive scores at the post-intervention and 1 month follow up periods were significantly higher than the pre-intervention scores (p<.001), but there was no significant difference between the post-intervention and follow-up scores (p=.171). These findings suggest that the cognitive stimulation program integrating activities from six cognitive domains is an effective intervention for improving cognitive function in elderly people with MCI. However, future research should extend follow-up periods to confirm the sustainable of the program's effects.
