Subcutaneous Zygomycosis due to Basidiobolus ranarum: A case Report
Abstract
Basidiobolomycosis is a rare subcutaneous fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs in healthy individuals. The clinical feature is painless, unilateral, well-circumscribed subcutaneous nodule which usually affects the buttocks or thigh, but can also seen in the arm, neck, face or trunk. The infection is characterized by hardened firm nodule which expands and spread locally. The fungal morphology and the Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon, although not entirely specific, are characteristic histological features. While culture is the gold standard for definitive diagnosis, immunodiffusion test is sensitive and specific for B. ranarum. There is no standard treatment. Most patients respond very well to oral potassium iodide therapy as well to azoles, particularly itraconozole.
We report a case of 14-year-old Thai girl with a large, slow-growing zygomycosis of the right thigh which respond well after receiving potassium iodide solution.
