Abstract

Background: Life experiences and self-esteem of caregivers in children with congenital heart disease is a matter of concern to healthcare professionals because caregivers play an important role in caring after discharge from the hospital.

Objective: To explore life experiences and self-esteem of caregivers for children with congenital heart disease.

Material and methods: This is descriptive qualitative research, using a method for selecting specific informants based on specified qualifications. Data were collected by interviewing 11 caregivers of congenital heart disease, using a semi-structured questionnaire as a research tool and analyzed the data through content analysis.

Result: Results revealed diverse life experiences of samples, reflecting caregiver life skills. Samples recognized and valued the human connection between caregiver and children with congenital heart disease, indicating service development direction to increased caregiver self-esteem.

Conclusion: Activities should be organized in a group relationship among the caregivers to encourage caregivers to explore the joint care experience of carers. Caregivers are negatively affected by society, such as asking about a child's illness, seeing a child as a burden to the caregiver, etc. Group processes may result in self-fulfillment and can help reducing the stress of care.
