โรคหลอดเลือดสมอง เป็นโรคที่มีความผิดปกติทางระบบประสาทและก่อให้เกิดผลกระทบที่รุนแรง พบบ่อยในวัยผู้ใหญ่และผู้สูงอายุทั่วโลก โรคนี้พบว่าเป็นสาเหตุการตายที่สำคัญเป็นอันดับ 3 รองจากโรคหัวใจและโรคมะเร็ง นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า โรคหลอดเลือดสมองเป็นโรคที่เป็นสาเหตุการเสียชีวิตที่สำคัญอันดับ 1 ในเพศหญิงและอันดับ 2 ในเพศชาย และเป็นโรคที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อทั้งผู้ป่วย ครอบครัว รวมทั้งระบบสุขภาพไทยในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างมาก สำหรับสถิติผู้ป่วยที่เข้ารับการรักษาด้วยโรคหลอดเลือดสมองระยะเฉียบพลันของโรงพยาบาลธรรมศาสตร์เฉลิมพระเกียรติระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2559- 2561 พบว่าจำนวนผู้ป่วยมีแนวโน้มที่สูงขึ้น ดังนี้ 857, 975 และ 996 ราย ตามลำดับ
