Web application Neonatal drug

Abstract

     Drug administration is one of the major quality indicators of patient safety in the hospital. Medication errors can occur in many processes such as drug preparation, dosage calculation and administration. Neonatal drug administration is even more complicated due to very small dose and dosing vary depends on infants’ body weight and age. Normally, drug preparation is based on adult formula. Therefore, neonatal drugs need to be modified and diluted, before administration. This heightens the risk of medication errors which might be threatened to patient’s life and well- being. 

        Recently, information technology has been involved in many aspects of patient care service. It is convenient, easy to access and available at all time. Our unit, realized the importance of using information technology to alleviate medication errors in our patients. We have developed web-based application to help nurses and physicians administer medication correctly. This application involved dose calculating based on infants’ weight and age, dilution instruction, drug incompatibility, maximum concentration and interval. Hopefully, this will improve medication safety in our patients.
