Anal Pap Smear pants are not as embarrassing as you think. Confidence and reassurance

Abstract

Background: At-risk clients, especially those who have sex with men who have anal sex, who come for an Anal Pap Smear test, need a rectal exam. Most of them will be embarrassed. They want complete privacy from the aforementioned problems, the disease screening unit has realized the importance regarding to privacy and self-worth. Therefore, the project of “Anal Pap Smear examination pants is not as embarrassing as you think” has been developed in order to make confidence and reassurance to ensure a rectal examination and reduce anxiety when receiving rectal examination services. The examination unit has cut the operative pants by adapting from the internal examination pants to be used for rectal examination. But there are shortcomings, inconvenient in the examination of the doctor, so the new model has been improved and replaced to be more comfortable.

Objective: 1. Rectal examination service users receive services based on privacy and self-worth. 2. The service users are satisfied with rectal examination services.

Material and methods: The staff meeting was performed to design pants for rectal examination or shock wave or acupuncture which regard to the privacy and self-worth of the service recipients and also to the convenient for the doctor's examination. Sewing was done according to the desired design and used to try with the service recipients. Assessment from physicians, staff and service users was performed and adjustments were made according to the physician's convenience in examination.

Result: The percentage of feeling more confident in providing services (not revealing), convenient, comfortable, easy to wear, feel like taking care of privacy were above 95% which is overall satisfaction.

Conclusion: Pants for rectal examination/ shock wave/ acupuncture help patients feel more confident in receiving the service (not naked), convenient, comfortable, easy to wear and feeling that privacy is taken care of.  Overall satisfaction, including doctors, staff, and service users, was at a very good level of 95%.
