A qualitative research on Theravada or Hinayana Buddhist teachings and practices pertaining to the attainment of salvation (nirvana) in order to ascertain the Buddhist identities that can be used in the creation of fashion clothing. This article discusses the roles, values and influence of such Theravada Buddhist concepts on the trends of fashion design that are compatible with the urban lifestyle of the new age group of people who are interested in the Buddhist ways of life for their physical and mental balance. It is the researcher’s intention to create a cognitive or communicative tool that is imbued with latent Theravada Buddhist teachings about how to lead a harmonious and sustainable living. Fashion clothing whose designs are influenced by Theravada Buddhist ideas, which has never been done before, can provide an alternative fashion trend. The researcher calls this fashion trend the “Theravada- niyom” (Theravadaism) style. It can be used to further the economic growth and development of the Thai fashion industry. This article is part of a research work titled “A comparative study of Buddhist fashion lifestyle between Buddhism and Zen” carried out with a financial support from “THE 90th ANNIVERSARY OF CHULALONGKORN UNIVERSITY FUND” (Ratchadaphiseksomphot Endowment Fund) the 29th, No. 4/2558.
