Abstract

(Content Analysis)

This study is a participatory action research (PAR) of which qualitative research methodology is applied. The objectives of research includes: 1) to study the overall upland rice farming conditions of the Karen People in Uthai Thani Province, 2) to develop Karen upland rice conservation model and 3) to evaluate Karen upland rice conservation model. The data in this study was collected through Documentary Research, In-depth Interview, Focus Group Discussion and Participant Observation. Evaluation data was analyzed using mean () and standard deviation (S.D). Check the triangular data and content analysis.

Based on study results, Kaen Magrood Sub-district population is largely made up of Pwo Karen People. This tribal group communicates using local dialect and mainly worships Buddhism and spirits. Pwo Karen Tribe is also found to have unique set of tradition, culture and beliefs. They formed not only a tight-knit community but also treated each member like their own family. Due to strong bond towards their community, this tribal group prefers to stay and work within their village. Important traditions of Pwo Karen Tribe include eating new rice, worshipping chedi, life prolonging ceremony and worshipping Bodhi Trees. Due to their tight-knit bonds, every member of the tribe is closely related and constantly communicates through traditions and cultural events. In the past, Pwo Karen Tribe mainly survived on gathering wild products and growing rice and Karen chili. Later, the community was introduced to advanced technology and merchant middlemen system. Monoculture farming began to replace the existing cultivation practice of the Pwo Karen Tribe, causing multiple upland rice species of the Pwo Karen Tribe to be reduced down to 2-3 species. Nevertheless, these Pwo Karen upland rice species have continued to exist today due to strong cultural landscape and local knowledge-sharing habits of the Pwo Karen People coupled with having younger generations that highly treasure the local resources of Pwo Karen Tribe. Key elements which helped to drive the success of “Karen Upland Rice Conservation Model” include: 1) Community knowledge and wisdom,2) Adjustment a Human Resource, 3) Resource in community  4) Exchange each other,5) Network of seeds, 6) Rice genetic, 7) Identity of community, 8) Cultural landscape and 9) Environmental conservation. This model which had already been evaluated by the advisor can also be referred to as “KAREN RICE MODEL”.
