Abstract

This study aims to develop a learning contract as an innovation for increasing students’ responsibility for attending class and punctuality in the 400111 Information world course and to investigate its effects upon learners’ responsibility for attending class and punctuality.  Subjects of the study were 169 students (out of 202 students) who enrolled for the 400111 class. The subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire asking for their opinions about the learning contract. It was found that learning contract was a “closed/specific” contract by which the teacher and students agreed to come to class punctually as quizzes were carried out weekly to assess student’s responsibility for attending class and punctuality.

Developing the learning contract, the researcher followed 4 steps: 1) preparation for the learning contract, 2) agreement to take the learning contract as part of the course, 3) putting the learning contract into practice, and 4) assessment of the learning contract.  It was found that regular quizzes by which students’ answer sheets are collected and ordered played an important role in increasing students’ responsibility both in terms of participation and punctuality.  Results show that out of 16 weeks, at least 90% of the students attended the class. There were 163 students (96.45%) who came to the class before or on time.  Additionally, the students had the highest satisfaction from using the innovation for increasing students’ responsibility with the average of 4.49.
