Background: malnutrition is an important problem in surgical patients which can lead to an increasing of surgical complication and mortality rate. The Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital Nutrition Triage (BNT) or Nutrition Triage (NT-2013) tool is a nutrition status screening and assessment tool which is a simple, effective and widely used in Thailand. The purpose of this study was to evaluate BNT score for predicting malnutrition-related complication and mortality in surgical patients.
Method: All patients who were admitted to surgical wards from January to June 2014 were included into this study. Clinical presentations and surgical outcomes were collected and analyzed. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) of each BNT score on morbidity and mortality rate was compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify possible risk factor
Result: A total of 326 patients were included into this study. The incidence of malnutrition-related complication in surgical patients was 38.34 % and mortality rate was 8.28 %. The most complication was sepsis as 15.34 %. Complication rate compared in patients with severity of malnourished level as mild, moderated, severe by BNT score were 56.25%,88.71%,85.71% versus 30.31% in the well-nourished patients, (OR 3.07,18.31,14.11 respectively). Three predictors (age ≥ 60, higher BNT score, infection) were significantly associated with malnutrition-related complication (P < 0.05) and malnutrition was the significant risk factor associated with mortality significantly (P < 0.05)
Conclusion: BNT score can be used as predicting risk factors for malnutrition-related complication and mortality in surgical patient. Higher BNT score increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality in surgical patients.
