Abstract

Effective pain management and anesthetic consideration for patients with chronic opioid use defined as continuous opioid consumption for more than three months remains a major clinical challenge. These patients often experience chronic pain, opioid tolerance, and opioid-induced hyperalgesia (OIH), a condition where opioids increase sensitivity to pain. Additionally, they may face stigmatization related to opioid misuse, leading to underestimation of their pain and inadequate treatment. Therefore, healthcare professionals with expertise in pain management play a critical role in appropriately assessing and managing postoperative pain for this population. This article discusses evidence-based approaches, including multimodal analgesia, to effectively treat pain in these patients.
