Effects of Family-centered Care on Self-efficacy in Participatory Involvement in Newborn Care and Satisfaction Towards Nursing Service of Mothers in NICU
Main Article Content
Abstract
Purpose: To study the effects of family-centered care on self-efficacy in participatory involvement in newborn care and maternal satisfaction towards nursing service in the NICU, Siriraj Hospital, Thailand.
Design: Quasi-experimental research, two groups with pretest and post-test.
Methods: The study subjects included 40 mothers with preterm newborns in the NICU, who were divided into a control group and an experimental group with 20 mothers each. The control group received routine nursing care only while the experimental group received nursing care according to the family-centered care concept over a period of 4 days. Data was collected by using the personal data record form, the self-efficacy in participatory involvement in newborn care, and the satisfaction towards nursing service questionnaires. Data were analyzed by using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with pretest scores as covariate, and t-test.
Main findings: The average scores of perceived self-efficacy in participatory involvement in newborn care and the average scores of satisfaction towards nursing service of both study groups were not significantly different (p = .664 and p = .551, respectively). Compared to that at pretest, each dimension of the perceived self-efficacy was significantly higher at posttest in both groups with the exception of an information sharing dimension which was found to be higher in the experimental group only.
Conclusion and recommendations: The activities promoting perceived self-efficacy in
information sharing should be implemented to improve routine nursing care. For a further study, unmet needs of patients and families should be examined for improving nursing care activities towards more family-centered care.
