Effectiveness of Teaching Method by Synthesis Knowledge from Evidenced Based Data in Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Mahidol University

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching method of synthesizing knowledge from evidence based data in baccalaureate students, Faculty of Nursing, Mahidol University.Design: A classroom action research.

Methods: Sample consisted of 281 third year nursing students in the year 2009, who were studying the topic of “The critical nursing care during labor” in Maternal-Child Nursing and Midwifery II course. This topic contained 9 subgroups. Students were divided into 18 small groups. Each group was responsible for 1 subtopic and they had to plan for methods of data collection and identify the best data that should be collected. Towards the end of their work, students synthesized knowledge into a case study which matched with their subtopic.

Main findings: The result showed that the effectiveness of this teaching method is categorized into three aspects: achievement, goodness, and happiness. Approximately 54% of the students had good achievement, 97% could present their ideas and open their mind to the class, and about 68% were happy to learn with this teaching technique.

Conclusion and recommendations: Results of the research suggested that teachers should give clear information about the learning process and content of the topic by using multiple channels of communication, and empower students during learning. This will no doubt ensure a better experience for nursing students when learning this topic.
