Application of Evidence-based Practice for Deep Vein Thrombosis Prevention in Medical-Surgical Patients
Main Article Content
Abstract
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a form of venous thromboembolism, the cause of which is associated with venous stasis, vessel wall damage and coagulation changes. Medical-surgical patients in hospital are at high risk for DVT because they are often immobilized in a prone position for extended periods. This can lead to increased length of hospital stay and other life-threatening events such as pulmonary embolism. Thus, DVT risk assessments, prevention of complications and rehabilitation based on evidence-based practice or scientific knowledge are needed. This study aimed to develop a guideline for DVT prevention, based on evidence-based practice. The application of this guideline was found to be practical; increased nurses’ confidence levels and satisfaction in nursing interventions; and enhanced the effectiveness and quality of care for medical-surgical patients.
