Evaluation of the Atypical Papanicolaou Smear in Ramathibodi Hospital

Abstract

Objective To determine the cervical histological diagnosis of women who had atypical squamous cells in Pap Smears at Ramathibodi Hospital.


Methodology Reviewed of colposcopic charts and final histologic diagnosis from colposcopic directed biopsy and/or conization and/or hysterectomy specimens of women with atypical cervical cytology.


Result Women who had atypical Pap smear in Ramathibodi Hospital was proven to have cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in 40 (39.22%) of 102 patients. 7 had microinvasive or invasive cancer of cervix.


Conclusion A Pap smear report of atypical cervical cytology should not be considered unalarmed. Further evaluation of the patient to detected existing CIN is required.
