Endometrial Thickness in Asymptomatic Postmenopausal Women

Abstract
Objective To determine whether measurement of endometrial thickness with transvaginal ultrasonography can be used to exclude endometrial abnormality in asymptomatic postmenopausal women.
Subjects Two hundred and thirty-four asymptomatic postmenopausal women were recruited. Endometrial thickness was measured by transvaginal ultrasonography. Endometrial thickness z 6 mm. was subjected to fractional dilatation and curettage.
Main outcome measures The histopathological diagnosis was reported and related to endometrial thickness.
Results No pathological findings were observed in endometrial thickness s 5 mm. Whereas, endometrial thickness of > 10 mm., hyperplasia and carcinoma werefound.
Conclusion Endometrial thickness in postmenopausal women can be used to exclude endometrial abnormality prior to hormonal replacement therapy.
