Abstract

Objective To determine whether measurement of endometrial thickness with transvaginal ultrasonography can be used to exclude endometrial abnormality in asymptomatic postmenopausal women.

Subjects Two hundred and thirty-four asymptomatic postmenopausal women were recruited. Endometrial thickness was measured by transvaginal ultrasonography. Endometrial thickness z 6 mm. was subjected to fractional dilatation and curettage.

Main outcome measures The histopathological diagnosis was reported and related to endometrial thickness.

Results No pathological findings were observed in endometrial thickness s 5 mm. Whereas, endometrial thickness of > 10 mm., hyperplasia and carcinoma werefound.

Conclusion Endometrial thickness in postmenopausal women can be used to exclude endometrial abnormality prior to hormonal replacement therapy.
