Development of a pharmaceutical care model for the care of patients infected with coronavirus 2019 in Nachaluai Hospital, Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

The objective of this action research was to develop a pharmaceutical care model for Coronavirus 2019 disease patients in Nachaluai Hospital, Ubon Ratchathani Province. This study was conducted between December 2022 and February 2023. Two groups of target samples, including: 30 participants of healthcare workers, and 120 patients were recruited. Simple random sampling method of participant recruitment was performed. Qualitative and quantitative data were completely collected by focus group discussions, observations, and in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, Paired t-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and content analysis.
The study results showed that model development process was included in the following 8 steps: (1) contextual analysis; (2) appointment of the working group; (3) data collection and analysis; 4) planning; (5) implementation; (6) Observation and monitoring; (7) Evaluation; and (8) the lessons learned. After model development, the results showed significant improvements in the overall scores on patient’s satisfaction, knowledge and behavior regarding anti-coronavirus 2019 drug (p<0.05). Patient's drug-related problems were statistically significantly reduced (p<0.05). In addition, patient's drug-related problems were completely identified and resolved. Key Success factors in this study were: (1) an effective participatory drug-related problem solving and tracking system, (2) communication technology, and (3) knowledge management regarding the use of anti-coronavirus 2019 drugs.
