Abstract

Paraquat herbicide is an agricultural chemical has a widely used in Thailand and contaminated into the aquatic systems causing toxicity to aquatic animals. The purpose of the present study was to investigate toxic effects of Paraquat on alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities and histopathological alteration of liver tissue in Silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus). Toxicity of paraquat was studied in fish with mean wet weight 32.60±1.62 g exposed to concentration 15 mg/L of paraquat for 4, 6 and 8 days. The results found that paraquat has effects on the enzymes activities of ALT and AST were increased at 4, 6 and 8 days (P<0.05) when compared with control group. Histopathological alteration in the liver, the cloudy swelling, hyperplasia and hypertrophy were found at Day4. The congregation in central vain and sinusoid was found in liver cells at Day6. Finally, the highest stage was found vacuoles degeneration at Day8. The results indicated that very low contamination of paraquat in aquatic systems can affect ALT and AST activities in liver and related to the different pathological alteration of the liver when the duration of exposure to the toxic substances increased
