Abstract

This was a one group, pretest-posttest quasi - experimental research.  The objective was to study the effects of health behavior changing program for diabetes mellitus risk group in Sanpamuang subdistrict, Muang district, Phayao province. The calculation using Krejcie & Morgan formula suggested 30 participants. They were selected randomly. All participants were living in the catchment area of the honored glorify of 60th Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty the Queen’s Community Health Center, Analayo.  The intervention was health behavior changing program adapted from the Department of Disease Control’s individual risk management and behavior changing program. Data were collected using health literacy assessment questionnaire developed by Health Education Division and Srinakharinwirot University. Descriptive statistics and paired t-test were used to analyze the data.

The results showed that after participating in the health behavior changing program for diabetes mellitus risk group, the level of health literacy concerning food, exercise, emotion, smoking, and alcohol cessation of participants had increased significantly. Moreover, their self-care behavior for disease prevention had also improved. As a result, their blood sugar level could be lowered to its normal level, until they were no longer in the risk group anymore. The lesson learnt from this health behavior changing program was that the support from the family and the community was significant. The participants’ family members and their community should help recognize and solve the participants’ problem, in order to stimulate awareness for sustainable self-care.
