Abstract

Introduction: Burns are injuries to the skin or tissue caused by heat, electricity, friction, radiation, or chemical exposure. They can affect people of all ages, requiring comprehensive knowledge and skills in nursing care planning, starting with a thorough assessment of the patient and family.
Aims: This study aimed to investigate the competence of professional nurses in caring for burn patients and to compare the competence of professional nurses before and after the implementation of a nurse mentoring program for professional nurses in caring for burn patients.
Methods: This quasi-experimental research consisted of 30 registered nurses working in the surgical ward caring for burn patients. The research instruments included experimental instruments: a nurse mentoring program for professional nurses caring for burn patients; and data collection instruments: a burn nurse competency assessment form and a professional nurse satisfaction assessment form regarding the nurse mentoring program. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, including frequency distribution, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Hypothesis testing was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, with statistical significance at the .05 level.
Results: The competence of professional nurses before and after the implementation of the nursing mentoring program for professional nurses in caring for burn patients showed a statistically significant difference at the .05 level. Furthermore, the satisfaction of professional nurses after the implementation of the nursing mentoring program was significantly higher than before the program.
Conclusion and recommendations: The nurse mentoring model is an effective strategy for enhancing the specialized skills necessary for burn patient care, and implementing a nurse mentoring program for professional nurses serves as a guideline and develops the nurses' ability to provide ongoing patient care.
