Abstract

Abstract

This quasi-experimental two-group posttest only design aimed to examine effects of the perineal trauma protection program on the degree of perineal tear and perineal pain from childbirth. A convenience sampling was used to recruit a sample of 60 participants who gave birth in a hospital, Chon Buri province. There were 30 participants in the control group received routine perineal care whereas the other in the experimental group received the perineal trauma protection program. Data collection was carried out from February to March 2018. Research instruments included the perineal trauma protection program, a demographic questionnaire, the degree of perineal tear evaluation’s record form with its reliability of .92, and the perineal pain scale with its reliability of 1.00. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test and independent t-test.

The results revealed that in the experimental group, the degree of perineal tear was significantly less those in the control group (c2= 20.00, p<.001). However, the perineal pain between the experimental and the control groups was not significantly different (p<.05). These findings indicate that the perineal trauma protection program is effective. Nurses/midwives can utilize to decrease the incident of perineal tear form childbirth among parturients.
